Preparing to Blog in a Crisis

Research

  • Google and Technorati are a good place to start
  • Find out if people are blogging about your industry, competitors, company or products

Assess the need

  • If people are already talking about your industry, competitors, company or products, you should consider creating a buzz map

Create a buzz map

  • A buzz map identifies the bloggers and or websites that are writing about your company, products, industry or issues most often
  • When assessing a blog or a website for a buzz map, consider the site's range of influence, number of comments, tone and willingness to consider alternate points of view [Source]

Practice blogging internally
  • To get comfortable with the medium, set up a password protected blog, preferably behind your firewall, and practice blogging about internal issues
Start a blog or acknowledge bloggers
  • If it’s relevant for your organization and you have the available human resources, start an external blog and begin growing your network
  • Even if even your organization isn’t ready to commit to having a blog, you can still let the bloggers know that you’re listing and that you value their feedback
